The Modern

Bodhisattva

Join Geshe Michael Roach and the Asian Classics Institute as we delve deeper into the profound teachings of Pabongka Rinpoche's Liberation Thrust into the Palm of Your Hand. From April 12th to 21st, 2024, immerse yourself in the depth of these teachings in our upcoming Steps on the Path retreat, The Modern Bodhisattva.
We're excited to reach the part of Liberation Thrust into the Palm of Your Hand that talks about the six main practices of a bodhisattva, and Geshe Michael will explore with us what it is to be a bodhisattva in the modern world. Too often in our daily lives, the focus is on me and mine--how can I get ahead? how can I get the advantage? how can I get more money, more fame, a better partner?
A modern bodhisattva turns this upside down. A modern bodhisattva finds success by putting others first. They give what they want first to others, and the seeds this plants ensure they will get what they want--in ways that are double or triple what they gave.
The Modern Bodhisattva reveals to us the ancient wisdom that underlies this unusual way of living. Why on earth would you do this? You will get explanations, techniques, and daily practices to put this surprising information into effect, and reap the rich rewards of living this way.
You'll also learn how a bodhisattva in the world today takes care of themselves--their mind, their heart, and their body--using the benefits of retreat, meditation, and yoga. You can't be an effective bodhisattva if you're exhausted, stressed out, and unhealthy! We'll learn the value of intelligent self-care in a world that seems to overvalue excessive work, productivity, and accomplishment. After all, it's not how much you do--it's your motivation in doing it.

We invite you to join us as we reach the profound teachings of how to live as a bodhisattva, and how to do so in the complexities of the modern world. Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or new to personal spiritual development, this retreat offers a unique opportunity to explore the timeless wisdom of the Buddha and make it directly applicable to the challenges of your daily life.

Our retreat will feature a week of daily teachings by Geshe Michael on Pabongka Rinpoche’s amazing text. In addition, we’ll enjoy a special series of classes taught by certified ACI teachers. Our theme this time is Retreat in Retreat. Senior teachers, most of whom have completed three-year or other long retreats, will share with us the information and details needed to do a successful personal silent retreat. We’ll cover topics like: what is contemplation, how to make tormas, benefitting from retreat once you go home, etc.
We’re also excited to announce that in the middle of our ten-day shared experience, we will enter a three-day personal silent retreat-within-retreat! You will be guided and supported by experienced teachers and staff at Diamond Mountain. There is no more profound and appropriate place to do retreat in the world. Online attendees will be encouraged to participate and supported as well.
There’s another special treat in store at The Modern Bodhisattva: it’s Diamond Mountain Retreat Center’s 20th anniversary, and the 10-year anniversary of the latest three-year, three-month, three-day retreat at Diamond Mountain, which ended in 2014. We’re planning a wonderful party that will be broadcast live for online participants of the full-course option.
As usual, we’ll have ceremonies of an offering to the teachers, a fire ceremony for peace, and a bodhisattva vow-giving ceremony. These ceremonies will be broadcast live online to all participants. There will be daily meditation and yoga classes as well.

By joining us for the Steps on the Path retreat, you're not only investing in your own spiritual growth but also supporting the continuation of these precious teachings.

As a not-for-profit organization, we also are asking for financial support to make this event as affordable as possible for anyone to attend. With your help, we can offer scholarships and work-study positions.

Additionally, we have sponsorship opportunities to cover major expenses during the event:

  • Ceremonies (offering to the teachers, the fire offering for peace)
    Goal: $2,000

  • Technology fees (like equipment, zoom fees, and dedicated staff)
    Goal: $5,000

  • Teacher support (food and transportation as ACI teachers, including Geshe Michael do not get paid for their teaching services)
    Goal: $10,000
