Who Is Master Shantideva?

Are you interested in bodhichitta, the Buddhist idea that people like you and I can develop the wish to become totally enlightened to save all living beings from suffering? Then Master Shantideva (c 685-763 CE) is who you want to study. Shantideva became fascinated with the Mahayana idea of bodhichitta, and devoted his life to studying, writing, and teaching about it.
He did this in unconventional ways. He was an innovative thinker who lived at Nalanda Monastery, but didn’t participate in monastic life. His fellow monks mocked him and shunned him. One day they cruelly put him up to a major teaching, thinking he would disgrace himself. Instead, he blew them away with a masterful presentation that became known as The Bodhisattva’s Way of Life. We will learn about it in this series of conversations.
Master Shantideva gave us radical and new ways of thinking about and becoming bodhisattvas (people who seek bodhichitta). He wove several of the six perfections of Buddhism into his teaching, and gave fresh ways of applying them to daily life. Master Shantideva is particularly eloquent on the topic of anger, and how and why we should eradicate it from our lives. If anger is one of your issues, you really must sign up for these discussions!
